THOUGHTS FROM OUR CEO, CATHERINE HEITZ NEW
In listening to RSC Associate’s “Fundraising Growth Now!” podcast interview with Susan Howlett and reading her book, “Boards on Fire!”, I admire her simple yet direct approach to attracting and activating a non-profit Board. Like RSC, Susan emphasizes practical and actionable strategies for energizing nonprofit boards to be more effective. Throughout her writings and the interview, Susan repeatedly reinforces these three essential points:
1. Focus on Relationships Over Transactions
Boards perform best when they prioritize building authentic, long-term relationships with donors, community members, and each other rather than focusing solely on fundraising transactions. By nurturing connections, Board members become better ambassadors and advocates for the organization's mission.
2. Clarify Roles and Expectations
A successful Board operates when members fully understand their roles and responsibilities. Clear communication about expectations—such as fundraising participation, community engagement, and governance—removes ambiguity and empowers Board members to take meaningful action.
3. Provide Tools and Support
Board members are more effective when equipped with the right training, resources, and support. This includes concise messaging about the organization's mission, practical fundraising tools, and ongoing encouragement to ensure they feel confident and capable.
These key insights undoubtedly encourage nonprofit leaders to ignite passion and purpose in their boards while driving greater impact.
